ESD Conversion of Pens & Small Accessories
Demonstrating controlled ESD behaviour on everyday, high-touch items without redesign or replacement.
The problem
Pens and small accessories are among the most frequently handled items in electronics production areas. Despite their size, they represent a disproportionate ESD risk due to repeated human contact, insulating plastic housings, and the absence of reliable grounding paths.
Conventional approaches rely on specialised ESD pens or prohibit standard items altogether, leading to procurement complexity, inconsistent availability, and user non-compliance.
The substrate
Typical pens and accessories are manufactured from ABS, polypropylene, polycarbonate, or mixed plastics—materials that are inherently insulating and prone to static charge accumulation.
Why replacement was not viable
- ESD-specific pens are often limited in availability and variety
- Users frequently bring personal or non-standard items into ESD areas
- Replacement-based control relies on behaviour enforcement rather than engineering control
- Frequent loss and damage increase recurring procurement cost
The ProShieldESD solution
ProShieldESD was applied as a thin, uniform coating on the external surfaces of pens and small accessories. The coating forms a continuous, controlled ESD surface without altering grip, usability, or appearance.
As a two-part system, the coating adheres strongly to plastic substrates and maintains consistent electrical behaviour independent of ambient humidity.
Performance outcome
- Surface resistance within ESD dissipative range
- Uniform charge dissipation across the coated surface
- No impact on writing performance or handling comfort
- Stable behaviour under repeated handling and cleaning
Standards alignment
The converted pens and accessories support ESD control programs aligned with IEC 61340 and ANSI/ESD S20.20 requirements when used as part of a grounded ESD system.
Key benefits
- Eliminates dependence on specialised ESD pen procurement
- Reduces ESD risk from overlooked, high-touch items
- Supports consistent user behaviour without enforcement burden
- Easy to recoat or repair if damaged
