ESD Conversion of Keyboards & Mouse
Applying controlled ESD behaviour to everyday input devices used at electronics workstations.
The problem
Keyboards and mouse devices are among the most frequently handled items at electronics workstations, test benches, and inspection areas. Despite their constant proximity to sensitive assemblies, these devices are typically made from insulating plastics and are rarely included in ESD control planning.
Static charge can accumulate on their surfaces through repeated human contact, increasing the risk of uncontrolled discharge near ESD-sensitive components.
The substrate
Standard keyboards and mouse housings are manufactured from ABS, polycarbonate, or blended engineering plastics with textured surfaces designed for grip and durability. These materials are electrically insulating by default.
Why replacement was not viable
- Limited availability and higher cost of specialised ESD keyboards
- User preference and ergonomics tied to familiar devices
- Frequent device replacement due to wear or failure
- Inconsistent compliance when non-approved devices are introduced
The ProShieldESD solution
ProShieldESD was applied as a thin, uniform coating to the external housings of keyboards and mouse devices. The coating forms a continuous dissipative surface without affecting tactile feel, key response, or optical mouse performance.
The two-part system provides strong adhesion to plastic substrates and delivers humidity-independent ESD behaviour suitable for long-term use.
Performance outcome
- Surface resistance within the ESD dissipative range
- Uniform charge dissipation across housing surfaces
- No interference with keyboard or mouse functionality
- Stable performance under repeated handling and cleaning
Standards alignment
The converted devices support ESD control programs aligned with IEC 61340 and ANSI/ESD S20.20 requirements when used within a grounded workstation environment.
Key benefits
- Reduces ESD risk from overlooked workstation devices
- Eliminates dependence on specialised ESD peripherals
- Supports consistent user behaviour without enforcement
- Easy to recoat or maintain if surfaces are damaged
