Application Case Study

ESD Conversion of Waste Bins & Containers

Reducing overlooked static risk from waste handling containers in ESD-controlled environments.

The problem

Waste bins and utility containers are present throughout electronics manufacturing facilities, including production lines, inspection areas, and ESD-controlled zones. These containers are frequently handled, moved, and filled with mixed materials, yet are rarely included in ESD control planning.

Standard plastic waste bins can accumulate significant static charge through handling and material disposal, creating uncontrolled discharge risk near sensitive assemblies.

The substrate

Common waste bins and containers manufactured from polypropylene with smooth or textured surfaces designed for durability and cleaning.

Why replacement was not viable

  • ESD-specific waste bins are rarely available or prohibitively expensive
  • Large numbers of bins already deployed across facilities
  • High wear rate requiring frequent replacement if carbon-filled plastics are used
  • Sustainability goals discouraging unnecessary disposal

The ProShieldESD solution

ProShieldESD was applied as a thin, uniform coating to the internal and external surfaces of existing waste bins and utility containers. The two-part coating adheres strongly to plastic substrates and creates a continuous dissipative surface.

The coating remains effective independent of humidity and withstands repeated handling and cleaning cycles.

Performance outcome

  • Surface resistance maintained within the ESD dissipative range
  • Uniform charge dissipation across container surfaces
  • No cracking or brittleness typical of conductive plastics
  • Stable ESD behaviour under routine waste handling

Standards alignment

The converted waste bins support ESD control programs aligned with IEC 61340 and ANSI/ESD S20.20 requirements when used within a grounded ESD environment.

Key benefits

  • Eliminates overlooked ESD risks from waste handling areas
  • Enables reuse of existing containers
  • Improves audit confidence in non-production zones
  • Easy to recoat or repair if damaged
